ZT Fight Night 3

ZT Fight Night 3 report

Saturday 22nd July 2006

Zero Tolerance Promotions (Sol Gilbert) held a fight night in front of a packed house at Hove Town Hall on Saturday July 22nd. The show featured a mix of boxing and K1 fights.

First up was Anne Niven of London Thai fighters against Michelle Ward who is now trained by James McSweeney. Niven looked good in the first round with a nice technical style but Ward came out banging from the bell in the second catching Niven with a great left hook, overhand right combination. Again a nice right cross by Ward and then Niven tried to teep her way out of trouble. Niven threw a beautiful right knee in the clinch but then Ward had her on the backfoot with a right cross to the body. Niven threw a high kick but Ward replied with teeps. More punches though were landing fromWard at the end of the round to outscore Niven.
In the third Ward continued to land the better shots even though she had her hands a bit too low and Niven scored well with some hard right crosses of her own. Ward though out pointed her landing more and was declared the winner of what was a good, hard fought opening bout.

The next fight was a boxing bout between Alex Blackhouse and local favourite James Brewster. Both fighters started off quite light just testing each other for gaps in the defences but towards the end of the round Brewster was landing the better shots to both head and body to clearly take the round. The second was a much more even round with Brewster edging it but come the third Brewster totally dominated the fight landing lots of clean shots, especially to the body and towards the end of the fight ended up putting on an exhibition to coast to an easy points win.

Another boxing bout followed between Jon Greaves of Peacocks Gym and local lad Craig Gilbert. This was a great fight for the crowd as both boxers were fast hard hitters. Greaves was getting the points initially but then Gilbert landed a couple of phenomenally hard body shots. Greaves though just stepped it up in the second with better timed shots landing and weaving in and rolling under anything Gilbert threw. A flurry of punches by Greaves against a beleaguered Gilbert left Gilbert unable to continue with a suspected broken rib and Greaves was the winner in the second round.

The third and final boxing bout was between Billy Harris and Mitchell Gilbert. Gilbert was young and looked a little nervous at the start, though his height gave him the greater range. Harris threw the harder shots to dominate the fight and ended the round with a great right cross. Harris continued to utterly dominate the second, pushing Gilbert round the ring and you could see his head wasn't in the fight. His corner wisely threw in the towel.

The next fight was a kickboxing bout between Danny Zahran of Zero Tolerance and Samuel Reilly. Zahran looked a lot bigger than Reilly and throughout the first round was the far more aggressive. The second was a little uneventful with Zahran throwing lots of punches but none really connecting. Reilly started the third better than he had done in the previous rounds but a right cross by Zahran put an off balance Reilly down and seemed to slow him. A reaching left hook by Reilly scored but this just seemed to fire Zahran up who came forward with a barrage of hard straight punches, the last of which gave Reilly an 8 count, making Zahran come the final bell a clear points winner.

The final bouts of the evening were all K1 rules. The first of which was an international heavyweight contest between local English favourite Tom Minter and Caffrey Mende of France. Mende started well with a nice left low kick followed by some good punch kick combinations. A back kick then gave Minter his first 8 count. Once Minter was to his feet Mende continued to come straight forward putting him down with a hard right hand to give Minter a second 8 count. Mende then switched tactics throwing some good low kicks but Minter showed what great heart he has coming forward with punches connecting and no fear. Minter was then cut up against the ropes but the referee said that the knee was after he had said break so it was a no contest. A lucky escape for Minter or was he about to come back into the fight? Either way he will be back in action on the next Zero Tolerance show on 16th September.

Next up was Woking's Alex Gould, fresh from winning gold in the B-class IFMA world championships in Thailand. He faced Frenchman Stephane Kebacor who had more experience and boasted an impressive record of 22 wins 1 draw 1 loss. Kebacor was first to score with low kicks and then came in with straight punches giving Gould an 8 count. Gould then scored with a couple of knees but then Kebacor came in with some good body shots. Things were easy for the Frenchman and he started showboating. A flurry of punches had Gould out on the canvas and Kebacor was the winner with a spectacular first round knockout!

The final bout was made at 78 kilos between Colin John of London Thai Fighters, trained by Paul Marchant and local hero Scott Gibson of Zero Tolerance, trained by Sol Gilbert. John was first to score with low kicks and punches. Gibson then scored with a low kick and then a great teep. Going into the clinch a knee by John just missed Gibson's chin. Towards the end of the 3 minute round John was lighter on his feet throwing more but Gibson was trying to pick his shots more cleanly. From the bell in the second John came running forward hell for leather scoring well with hands and knees. This was turning into a screamer of a fight as Gibson refused to give way standing toe to toe, though admittedly mainly defending. The crowd were on their feet now as this was a great fight! John's flurry of punches though had caused some swelling on Gibson's left eye. Come the third John looked tired and was a lot scrappier than he had been in previous rounds. Gibson now was scoring the better shots with the crowd roaring behind him. Well timed techniques opened up a nasty cut on John that drove the crowd wild. The place waited with baited breath for the result and a draw was declared. Under these K1 rules that means an extra round much to the excitement of the crowd. The extra round was clearly Gibson's who landed far cleaner shots more often and harder. John looked out on his feet at times and was lucky not to be counted. Gibson turned on the style with a jump spinning back kick just missing and then a nice teep scoring. The cut on John's head was opened again and come the end of the round their could only be one winner - Gibson.Fights this make a show and make sure you don't miss the next Zero Tolerance Fight night at Hove Town Hall on 16th September.
